While the automation of assembly lines displaced unskilled workers decades ago, the development of AI in recent years creates the potential for the current generation of entry level employees to be displaced by AI. Clerical and administrative positions, such as data entry clerks and customer service agents, have been susceptible to AI.


Engineers have felt the effects of new technology in the form of computer-aided design (CAD). This technology allows engineers to design, inspect, and manage projects with increased accuracy and sophistication. AI has enabled engineers to reach new heights, after they learned how to make technology work for them. Before CAD, changes to hand-drawn designs often meant that engineers needed to start over some blueprints from scratch.


If you are interested in pursuing a career related to engineering or architecture, you could position yourself as a drafter. These employees who have a curiosity for design will learn how to make AI beneficial to their type of industry by using CAD to create 2D and 3D blueprints that provide dimensions along with building materials.


According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the 2024 median pay for drafters was $31.44 per hour. This position generally requires an associate’s degree. During this timeframe, there were roughly 192,100 positions available for drafters. The employment change for 2024 thru 2034 is minus 600 jobs.


Fields that will remain unaffected by AI are construction and extraction occupations. One example of this type of employment is an ironworker. This position requires a high school diploma or the equivalent. Ironworkers received a median pay in 2024 of $29.78 per hour. The employment change for 2024 thru 2034 is plus 3,800.


If you enjoy design and project management, architecture would be a good industry for you. Some studies conclude that automation could impact as much as 37% of responsibilities. Others indicate that number to be closer to 15%. This job requires a bachelor’s degree and the median pay in 2024 was $46.49 per hour. The employment change for 2024 thru 2034 is plus 4,800.


The occupational outlook for assemblers and fabricators remains less positive. People in this industry build finished products while primarily working in manufacturing plants. In 2024, this industry provided employment for 1,885,400 people. This job requires a high school diploma or the equivalent. The median pay was $20.95 per hour.


Over the next decade, this industry will decline by 11,200 jobs due to new technologies in robotics that will perform increasingly complex responsibilities; however, some niches will add jobs such as electrical, electronic, and electromechanical assemblers. This niche will increase job openings by 11,900 through 2034.


While finding your career path, gather as much information as possible about employment projections and what it will take to attain competitiveness in the workforce in the coming years. Do not get blindsided by AI. If job projections will decline over the next decade, find out if AI is the cause and position yourself accordingly. Get the right skills for the niche.


While informed decisions are optimal, this type of research also looks good on a resume and cover letter by demonstrating the initiative to stay up to date with regards to trends and fluctuations in the workplace.
